Grieving and SupportThe Grieving Process
Grieving for the loss of a pet is often complicated. Many times we are confused by the feelings and emotions we are having about a beloved pet’s death. Sometimes friends and family don’t understand what a pet means to us in life and cannot empathize with these very real and deep feelings.
One of the most difficult aspects of grieving is to understand what has happened. It is important to understand how you feel and the emotions you are expressing are okay. You can be suddenly overwhelmed because until a beloved pet dies, you didn’t know how much you cared and loved him or her.
There are many stages of grief. The grieving process and the time it takes to come to terms with your pet’s passing varies from one person to another. The stages of grieving can include:
- Shock, Disbelief, Denial
- Anger, feeling responsible for what happened
- Acceptance, Resolution, Recovery
