My Pet Is Vomiting, What Can I Do?

FIRST AND FOREMOST

MAINTAIN YOUR PET’S HYDRATION! You should offer small amounts of water, Pedialyte or Gatorade frequently throughout the 12-24 hour fasting period. Never completely restrict you pet’s access to fluids. Doing this will cause you pet to become severely dehydrated very quickly. Severe dehydration can cause devasting effects to your pet’s kidney function.

STEP #1

FASTING:

  • Withhold food for 12-24 hours.
  • If your pet has quit vomiting in this time frame, then move to step #2.
  • If your pet is continuing to vomit while fasting, do not wait any longer to see a veterinarian.

STEP #2

BLAND DIET:

  • Feed small, frequent meals of a bland diet for 24 to 48 hours.
  • A homemade bland diet can include plain chicken and rice, or a prescription diet for sensitive stomachs.

STEP #3

TRANSTION:

  • Over the course of 2-3 days, gradually transition your pet’s diet back to regular dog food.
  • You can add a small amount of a bland diet, or canned pumpkin, or warmed chicken broth to encourage eating.
